How We Get Started:
In April of 2015, on the anniversary of his ninth year of being divorced, Marco Diaz was having a bit of a hard day, so instead he decided that he was going to do more to serve those in the homeless community and do something that had not been done before. He decide to do something to help them feel better about themselves and let them know that they are loved. As a result, he brought together a group of friends to carry out the idea of providing 100 haircuts and mini-make overs in a one-time event.
The first event took place on July 19th, 2015 at the Road Home Homeless Shelter and instead of 100 haircuts they were able to provide 267 haircuts and mini-make overs. However, the greater surprise was not in the number of people served, but how those who were served, as well as those who served, felt and the hearts that were touched. During that event, so many asked when the next event was going to take place that even though there were no plans for another event, the initial organizing group was expanded, they came up with the name of CARE-Cuts and formally became an organization.
Just a few months later, the second event was held, in which the provided more than 320 haircuts and mini-makeovers, along with clothing, food and events of the kids. A petting zoo with rescue animals was also added and later the Build- A-Buddy became a favorite of the children.
On Dec 27, 2016 CARE-cuts officially became a federally recognized 501(c)3 organization (EIN 81-2735057), making the contributions of so many caring volunteers and donors more effective.
It has been six years since our first event (in 2002) due to the pandemic we were not able to do any events) and in that time over 6,200 haircuts have been provided, over 2,400 mini makers and over 1,500 build-a-buddy animals donated, and most importantly 1,000’s of hugs, tears and smiles.
We’re so very grateful to the hundreds of volunteers who donate their time, talents, and monetary donations so we can offer such events. We can’t do it without you!

How We Do It:
Since most of these events are outside (on a closed road, under a portico, in a parking lot etc.) our events need to be self-contained. Through generators we provide our electrical needs for clippers and blow dryers. Through a carpet cleaning truck we provide the water we need to wash the hair of our patrons and then we bring in all the canopies, tables and chairs.
The key of these events are our volunteers; we could not do it without our barbers and our beauticians, as well as our many other volunteers (setup, check-in, hair stylist, food etc.) For each event we have individuals sign up for a slot to volunteer. We average between 120-140 volunteers depending on the size of the event.
Finally, it is NOT what these volunteers do that makes a difference, it is how they do it, that does. The love and kindness with which these volunteers serves make an immediate impact to those we serve, They immediately feel their love and an instant connection is made. As we always say “the haircuts is only the means, helping them feel love, hope and that people CARE is the goal”.

What We Do:
CARE-Cuts provides haircuts and mini makeovers to men, women and children who are homeless and refugees.
When we started, since it was supposed to be a one-time event, we did not own any of the items we needed for our first event, we raised a little money and funded the rest to make it possible.
Once we realized we were going to move forward with more events, we decided to raised money. The Kahlert Foundation was the first to believe in us and through their generous donation we were able to buy the canopies, the tables, the chairs and the capital items we needed to conduct ongoing events. We decided to have an annual black-tie event to fund our ongoing operational expenses.
Initial we started working with the homeless community and later we began to also work with the refugee community we felt that the goal was the same to help feel loved, that there is hope and that there are those who CARE.
